2nd Annual Workers Compensation Conference

The Workers’ Compensation Conference, hosted by Matthew J. Concannon, MD, FACS, and The Work Center, was held this past Wednesday, May 11, 2011. This was the 2nd year for the annual event, and there was a large turnout to hear this year’s speakers, earn Continuing Education Units, and win thousands of dollars worth of door prizes.

The event was MC’d by our very own Christian Van der Reit, RN, who has over 18 years of service in the medical industry. She welcomed the opening speaker, John Graham, MD, from The Pain Treatment Center, who spoke about low back pain and its effect on the health care system and workers’ compensation claims. His informative talk was followed by Dr. Concannon’s presentation entitled, “Controlling Costs & Maximizing Care for the Injured Worker: Advice from a Health Care Provider.” Dr. Concannon encouraged attendees to be involved in the process of workers’ compensation claims, rather than simply sit back and watch their employees go through the system. After a coffee break, James Coyle, MD, of the Midwest Spine Center in St. Louis, gave an interesting account of the history of orthopedic medicine, beginning with orthopedic procedures performed in Ancient Egypt and moving forward through history to present day. Lunch was provided for all of the attendees (and was outrageously delicious), and the next speaker was Rick Montgomery, an Attorney at Law from Atwill and Montgomery, who shared several case studies to illustrate the definition of injury under the Missouri Workers’ Compensation Law. Rounding out the day was Greg Rubel, a Physical Therapist from The Work Center, who gave a presentation called “Industrial Rehab: A Deeper Understanding,” to better describe the rehabilitation process injured workers undergo at The Work Center.

The prizes given away throughout the day exceeded $3000, and included prescription-grade skincare products from Obagi; a skincare starter-kit from Skinceuticals; a basket of pure, micronized mineral makeup from ColoreScience; Medical Microdermabrasion from Concannon Plastic Surgery; and Cardinals tickets donated by The Work Center. After the Conference, Concannon Plastic Surgery hosted an open house and reception at their office, allowing all attendees to tour their state-of-the-art facility and surgical suite and to meet their highly-trained staff. During the reception, more prizes were given out—including laser hair removal treatments, Botox Cosmetic treatments with Dr. Concannon, and a Clarisonic Mia Skincare Brush—and the Concannon Champagne Punch was enjoyed by all.

The Team at Concannon Plastic Surgery would like to thank everyone who participated in the day’s events, including the attendees, the amazing speakers, and everyone from The Work Center. It was a phenomenal event, and we all look forward to the 2012 Workers’ Compensation Conference!
